When I first began my lectin free journey back in 2018, I was a skeptic about all the supplements associated with the Gundry name. I've even heard a few haters accuse Dr. Gundry of publishing best-selling health and nutrition books just to peddle supplements. Believe me, nothing could be further from the truth. As a writer myself, I know how hard it is to get published let alone make the New York Times bestseller list. Seems there are easier ways to sell vitamins. But do we need what Gundry MD is selling?
Don't get me wrong. I am a lifer vitamin popper. But with this healthier way of eating, maybe I don't need to supplement as much, right? So I thought!
Dr. Gundry literally wrote the book on living lectin free with his New York Times best seller The Plant Paradox. Before I'd even heard of the book, I stumbled upon his "lectin papers" in a medical journal after years of dealing with a frustrating autoimmune condition called psoriasis that presented only in my fingernails. It seemed like I had tried everything known to man, but to no avail. After only a week eliminating lectins, I saw results. So, obviously I committed to the lectin free lifestyle right away. But I wasn't quite sold on supplements.
Shortly after I began eating lectin free, I started seeing ads for Gundry MD products like Vital Reds and Primal Plants popping up on Instagram and Google. I ignored them at first, as I'm not one to click ads. But, one day I saw a video on Instagram of Dr. Gundry talking about his wife Penny and how he created a product just for her. Something about the video resonated with me. So, I bought some. Can you guess what that product was? Keep reading to see which of my top 12 was my first Gundry MD product, and to see if it worked for me.
12) Polyphenol Dark Spot Diminisher
Gundry MD is not just about dietary supplements. There is a whole line of skin care products, too. The Polyphenol Dark Spot Diminisher was actually the very first Gundry MD product I ever bought way back when. I chose the 3-pack for a better per unit price. As a rule, I buy Gundry MD in multiples now.
When I received my 3-pack of the serum, I used some on my chest right away. The stuff is formulated with a combination of acids, vitamins, and super powerful antioxidants called polyphenols to topically fight the leading causes of dark spots -- primarily sun damage and excess sugar that deposits itself on your skin.
I was excited to get results and post before and after pics on Instagram. Though I started using it the moment I got it, I wasn't very consistent about applying twice daily as recommended. So, I quit using it and stashed it away in my medicine cabinet. But recently, I found the two bottles I had left and started applying as directed. To my surprise, this stuff actually works in several ways.
First, it has an immediate illuminating effect from a special skin-brightening ingredient -- diamond dust. Second, after just a week, I noticed the overall tone of my skin was significantly more even. Then, some of my smaller, light brown freckles faded completely. The larger dark spots are still there, but they are considerably lighter. I'm very encouraged that the product is actually working.
Unlike many dark spot correcting serums that rely mostly on exfoliating acids, Polyphenol Dark Spot Diminisher has the superpowers of antioxidants known as polyphenols. Here are the ingredients:
Deionized Water, Propanediol, Bacillus Ferment, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Squalane (Derived from Sugar Cane), Glycerin, Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu Plum) Fruit Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Niacinamide, Rhodiola Rosea (Roseroot) Extract, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Calluna Vulgaris (Heather) Flower Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Extract, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Extract, Diamond Powder, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Fragrance (Parfum), Spiraea Ulmaria (Meadowsweet) Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Lysolecithin, Pullulan, Resveratrol, Sclerotium Gum, Sodium Acrylate/ Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Xanthan Gum, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Citric Acid.
As you can see, there's nothing but good stuff in there. And maybe you noticed there's a fragrance. I am super sensitive to fragrance on my skin. If my skin doesn't agree with a fragrance, it lets me know with an itchy eczema patch. I have had zero reaction to the fragrance in this product.
If you're looking for a dark spot serum, give this one a try. Use as directed, and watch those dark spots fade away.
11) Heart Defense
My top 11 pick is a powerful blend of flavonols and nutrients designed to support optimum heart health. I'm not going to lie; I like this one because it tastes good. When I first opened the jar, I waxed nostalgic for my old friend Oreo. The deep dark chocolate flavor tastes just like the beloved sandwich cookies. And, as some of you know, if I can use a Gundry MD supplement in recipes, I will. Why not eat your supplements rather than drink them?
Heart Defense does make a delicious dark chocolate drink you can enjoy hot or cold. But check out my devil's food brownies with this heart healthy dark chocolate powder. You can click on the photo for the recipe.
So, what makes this supplement heart healthy? Why, all the deep-colored POLYPHENOLS of course. Heart Defense is loaded with super dark chocolate, and coffee extract. Plus it has flaxseeds, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids -- known for being the best fat for a healthy heart. And of the 35 calories in per serving, this supplement serves up 10 of those calories in good pure fat.
Additionally, Heart Defense contains Vitamin D3(200 IU), calcium (9 mg), and a just the right amount (2 mg) of iron. Vitamin D is a proven blood pressure reducer and is known to lower the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Calcium contributes to the electrical signal that coordinates heart function. Healthy iron levels are important to prevent anemia, which leads to cardiovascular problems.
For me, this supplement has just what I need to keep my irregular heartbeat, a condition I was born with, in check. My fast-and-easy way to enjoy this supplement is to just add a scoop to 8 oz hot water and drink it like black coffee. It's so yummy just like that. But if I have more time, I make the brownies, waffles, or dark chocolate macadamia cookies. All the recipes are on the blog in the Gundry MD section.
If you're concerned about heart health, please give Heart Defense a try.
10) Primal Plants
Number 10 on my Gundry MD list is Primal Plants. This delicious green apple flavored powder mixes with water for a refreshing beverage. Here's why I love this supplement. You know that fresh glowing skin, a spring in your step, and regular bowel movements you get when you eat lots of greens? When I take this supplement every day, I get all the same benefits. And it's no wonder. Primal Plants is formulated with four special blends to incorporate super greens, metabolic enhancers, digestive support, and probiotics into one scoop. This stuff has super green polyphenols, good fiber, calorie burners, and good bacteria. Just read the ingredients.
Greens Blend: Spinach, broccoli, kale, cinnamon bark, gymnema, sylvestre leaf, fannel seed, mulberry leaf extract, pine bark extract, rhodiola rosea root extract, diindolymethane, berberine, HCI (from berberis aristata root/stem/bark)
Metabolic Enhancing Blend: Green tea leaf extract, ginger root, white tea leaf extract, bitter melon fruit extract, turmeric root extract (95% curcuminoids), black pepper
Digestive Support Blend: Chicory root fructo-oligosaccharides, and bromelain
Probiotic Blend: Bacillus coagulans, lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, lactobacillus reuteri
Eating lots of green vegetables is important. But sometimes, especially when I'm launching a new seasonal Foodie Box, it's hard to get enough. That's when I reach for Primal Plants. It makes me feel (and look) like I'm eating a bunch of fresh leafy greens every day. Plus, it has not one, not two, but four strains of probiotics to eliminate bloat and gas. I'm always a little bummed when I let my Primal Plants supply run out. But, I know where to get it.
9) ProPlant Complete Protein Shakes
Next on my list of picks is the incredible plant-based protein shake called ProPlant Complete Shake. It's a potent high-fiber plant protein blend from flaxseed, hemp protein, and spirulina, that makes this one of the best protein shakes on the market.
Most of the protein shakes out there are just one-faceted protein-loading drinks often with just whey, flavor and sweetener. And the plant-based ones almost always have soy, which we all know is toxic unless it's fermented. Additionally, most protein powders are absent of any fiber.
The greatest thing about the ProPlant shakes is that the protein and fiber are perfectly balanced to support optimum muscle recovery after a workout, control your appetite, and metabolize fat. Here's the dream team of plant proteins and fibers in ProPlant:
Protein Blend (flaxseed, hemp protein, spirulina)
You can even drink a shake as a meal replacement, which I often do. Sometimes I'll dine out and overeat. Who doesn't? But I never worry, because the next day I do a liquid diet. It always includes a ProPlant shake. I keep both chocolate and vanilla in my stash. My preference is vanilla, unless I'm in the mood for chocolate. Both taste good. I have developed a great smoothie recipe using either flavor and a holiday nog recipe using the vanilla flavor. Here they are:
LFG Daily ProPlant Shake
1 Scoop ProPlant Complete Shake
1/2 Cup Ice
8 oz Water
1/2 Frozen Green Banana
1 Cup Power Greens
1 Tbsp Blanched Almond Butter
LFG Holiday ProPlant Nog
1 Scoop Proplant Vanilla
1 Cup Almond Milk
1 Cup Cocomut Milk
1 Frozen Green Banana
1 tsp Ground Cloves
4 oz Barrel-aged Whiskey or Dark Rum (optional)
1 Cup Whipped Cream
Just blend it all up smooth and drink it as a meal. For the nog, add the booze and whipped cream after filling your glass(es). Both drinks are very filling, and you won't be hungry for hours. There's another smoothie recipe on the side of the tub that involves coconut milk. I find blending this powder with water makes for a nicer, lighter consistency.
8) Vegetable Broth
Number 8 may surprise you, but I think you'll understand why it made my list. Do you ever just need a good store-bought bouillon for quick and easy recipes? When you go to buy one and read the label (because I know you always do), you find deal-breaking ingredients that force you to put it back on the shelf. Are there any vegetable broths or bouillons that we can have? Many contain tomatoes, potato flour, sugar, or the dreaded MSG. No, no, no, and no!
When I tried Gundry MD Lectin Free Vegetable Broth, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked in my dishes. It has a hint of ginger, so really lends itself well in Asian cuisine.
Imagine a savory, gingery, garlicky, aromatic broth with a hint of tangy umami from reishi mushrooms and the slight bite of black pepper. It's really good. Plus, this powdered broth has silica, which is a great skin supplement -- especially for those of us battling psoriatic disease. You bet I'm going to rank this one high! Additionally, this broth has three essential amino acids: glycine, L-proline, and L-lysine HCI. Glycine is a protein building block, and L-lysine helps us absorb calcium. Glycine is the most abundant amino acid in collagen. It's a structural protein that makes for healthy skin, joints and bones.
All that said, I'm a cook. And when Gundry MD throws me a great tasting broth that's lectin free, I'm going to use it in recipes. Check out the wonton soup and egg foo young recipes I created with this tasty (and healthy) product. Both are on the blog.
If you've been searching for a decent bouillon cube for recipes, look no further. Just get the Lectin Free Vegetable Broth.
7) MCT Wellness
Okay, who likes Sour Patch watermelon gummies? I admit I sneak one (or two) when my kids get them at the movies. If you want a supplement that does double duty as a ketogenic c8 fuel and a brain food and tastes like movie candy, MCT Wellness is it.
When I tried this for the first time, I was blown away by the sweet and sour watermelon lemonade flavor. It really does taste like candy. But the noticeable benefits might trump the taste. Can we talk about poop in the same paragraph as candy? We're all adults here. If you want to get regular, use this for a day or two. The acacia fiber and MCT oil really did me a solid (haha).
I take this supplement "regularly" because it makes me feel full, alert, and satisfies my taste buds. It contains 3 g of fiber, 30 calories, 2 g of fat, 3 carbs and 0 g sugar. If you're keto, that's a magic combo. If you're just trying to lose weight, it works for that too.
Here's how this supplement does its job. Medium-chain triglycerides are fats that have a shorter length and are more easily digested than longer-chain fatty acids found in so many of the foods we eat. Extracted from coconut oil, MCT oil contains caprylic and capric acids which have unique health benefits. It promotes weight loss, increases energy, burns fat, increases ketones, fights yeast and bacteria, reduces risk of heart disease, and manages blood sugar. Did I mention it tastes like candy?
Try my watermelon lemonade cupcakes! Recipe is on the blog.

6) Energy Renew
I devoted an entire blog page to Energy Renew because I love it so much. I take Energy Renew early in the morning before my uphill walk. Have you heard of eating a banana or drinking chocolate milk before a workout? This is better.
Energy Renew is a Gundry MD dietary supplement that is marketed as a drink mix with not only delicious passion fruit flavor but very specific health benefits. On the front label are two bullets: 1) promotes youthful heart, energy, and vitality, and 2) supports metabolism and weight loss. In my full review, I put these statements to the test. Let's just say, Energy Renew passed the test -- even "youthful heart". You'll have to read the full review to see how I tested that one.
How does it work? This supplement contains potent amounts of two proven nutrients for energy, and they're listed on the back. One is 5,000 mg of D-Ribose, a critically important sugar molecule that's actually part of our DNA. YES, we need carbs! D-Ribose can improve energy and workout performance, so it's a great thing to add before a walk up a steep hill, or a gym workout. The other is N-Acetyl L-Carnitine. This nutrient is proven to help the body produce energy. It is also vital for heart and brain function, muscle movement and other bodily processes.
If you're looking for a supplement that gives you energy plus has cardiovascular benefits, try this one that kills two birds with a single stone.
5) Vital Reds
Perhaps one of the best-known of the Gundry MD supplements is Vital Reds. It's blend of powerful red polyphenols served up in a delicious cherry drink mix. The red polyphenols resveratrol, catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, and anthocyanin, are found in foods like berries, grape skins, acai, beets, and currants just to name a few. In all, there are 1760 mg of polyphenols in one tiny scoop. Most people take this in the morning to give them all-day energy.
My wiring may be different than most. I'm just wired. So, instead of the morning, I take Vital Reds right before bed as a sleep aid. With all 8 B vitamins (B1 (thiamin), B2 9riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), B12 (cobalamin)) working together, I sleep like a baby. I put my head on the pillow and don't wake up until my alarm goes off at 5:30.
Sleep is so important to me. And, I haven't slept this good in so long. So, I keep vital reds on my shelf always. I buy 6 at a time for the best price.
In addition to drinking this supplement, I make a stunning salad dressing out of it. If you like the berry vinaigrette that comes with the Wendy's salad, then you'll love this:
LFG Red Berry Vinaigrette
1 Tbsp. Avocado Oil
1 Tbsp. Balsamic Vinegar
1/2 Scoop Gundry MD Vital Reds
Just emulsify it with a whisk and drizzle it on mixed greens. Add grilled pastured chicken, organic strawberries, and blanched almonds for a copycat Wendy's salad. So good!
4) Lectin Shield
Let's face it, we all cheat on the lectin free diet either by choice or necessity. Dining out on this lifestyle is difficult, to put it mildly. As hard as we try to pick from a menu, often we end up with the lesser of all evils. That's when having Lectin Shield is so handy. It's a powerful blend of known lectin-blocking polyphenols from plants like okra and bladderwrack seaweed plus the lectin-binding glucosamine to carry those lectins safely through and out.
I take one Lectin Shield just before I eat dinner out, and it does the trick. How do I know? Before I used Lectin Shield, and after I went lectin free, my stomach was very sensitive to lectins -- particularly potatoes. If I ate potatoes out, I'd get terrible, embarrassingly loud burps. Now, I can take a Lectin Shield and eat potatoes without the expanding belly and belches.
I don't recommend eating lectins every day and just taking Lectin Shield. Healing your gut is key to sustained health. Do the work, heal your gut, and use this supplement for special occasions, when dining out with family or friends.
3) Polyphenol Rich Olive Oil
This oil is made from olives from a distressed, old olive grove in Morocco. Distressed trees fight harder to survive, hence they produce olives with higher concentrations of polyphenols. A very bitter olive taste means more polyphenols.
Remember, I told you about my psoriatic nail disease? This olive oil was part of my psoriatic nail protocol to cure the disease. Not only is this olive oil great drizzled on food, but it's a perfect vehicle for indigo naturalis. I mix 1/4 tsp of indigo naturalis powder with 2 teaspoons Gundry MD Polyphenol Rich Olive Oil and paint my nails with it. This along with a lectin free diet, eliminating dairy, and taking a lot of vitamin D3 and C, zinc, biotin, and silica proved to be all the pieces to my puzzle. If you have psoriatic nail, you might try this.
If you don't have a form of psoriatic disease, just enjoy the olive oil for it's delicious polyphenol rich goodness.
2) PrebioThrive
I can't rave enough about PrebioThrive. This supplement is extremely effective for regularity. The prebiotic fiber feeds those good gut bugs, which are essential for fighting off the bad ones. This is key to healing that leaky gut.
The immediate benefit of PrebioThrive is good poop (here we "go" again). And the lasting effects are ultimate gut-health. Use it daily to prime the pump and eliminate the initial gassiness you might experience. Another tip is to ease into it. This stuff is potent. Use 1/4 scoop at first and work your way to a full scoop.
That said, I NEVER drink this supplement as directed. I ALWAYS use it in recipes. It's unflavored, which is a blank canvas for a recipe artist like myself. It makes the best chocolate chip cookies. And, my spice cake is phenomenal. Both recipes are on the blog. And, YES, eating these treats gives you the same benefits as drinking the supplement.

1) Power Blues
Drum roll please! It's really no secret that Power Blues remains my all-time favorite Gundry MD product. It's basically all the super potent blue polyphenols in a drink that tastes like a blue Jolly Rancher. The difference between Power Blues and Vital Reds is the blend of polyphenols. Blue polyphenols are called anthocyanins. They boost energy, help you slim down, and attach nicely to lectins to carry them safely through and out, making digestion much. I experience all of that when I use Power Blues.
This drink gives me so much energy, not just a burst, but lasting energy. And it has a very desirable side-effect for me -- weight loss. I usually take this one in the morning and it gives me sustained energy and an appetite suppressing effect without feeling full.
Usually, I don't break my fast until later in the day. Intermittent fasting is a proven way to lose weight. When I take Power Blues, I never feel hungry. I first tried Power Blues in 2020 when I built my first commercial kitchen in the Granary District in Salt Lake City. I basically lived on this stuff. I wasn't looking to lose weight, but I did. In two weeks, I dropped ten pounds before I even realized it. I thought it was just because I was so active working around the clock to install sinks, ovens, racks and organize all my ingredients for packaged foods. That was likely part of it. But since I drank the "Blues" every morning, I had plenty of energy to work all day. I never got tired, and I only needed one meal in the evenings. So, this supplement definitely supports a weight-loss program like that.
Today, my second kitchen build is behind me. I'm now in the Millcreek neighborhood of Salt Lake City. And you bet, I took Power Blues with me. I still use it regularly for energy and weight management. It's just the best!
Now, I've tried many, many more Gundry MD products. These are just my top 12. And, it wasn't easy to narrow them down. In general, all the Gundry MD supplements are super potent, quality supplements that really do what they're formulated to do. And I didn't even get into the foods. The noodles, coffee, pancakes, popped chips, and "mounds" bars are wonderful.
If you're wondering about a Gundry MD product that's not on this list, just ask me. As a proud Gundry MD ambassador, I can help you make an informed decision and give you a nice discount, too.
Hello,
